The agitation has since been called off and normalcy has returned to Vasai

vivek Local MLA Vivek Pandit, who was on a hunger strike at Vasai in neighbouring Thane district for the last four days to demand exclusion of 53 villages from Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation ,was shifted to the Thane Civil Hospital after his condition worsened.

Chaos reigned yet again in Vasai as protesters turned violent  stoning public transport busses and lighting rubber tyres on fire. The police had to resort to lathi charge to control the crowd. Vivek Pandit the local MLA was on an indefinite hunger strike from March 2nd to protest against the inclusion of 53 villages in the Virar-Vasai Municipal Corporation (VVMC)

Speaking in Kolhapur, Chavan said he would convene an all-party meeting within 15 days to sort out the issue of delinking the 53 villages from the Virar-Vasai Municipal Corporation (VVMC).

The agitation crowned the indefinite hunger strike launched by Vasai legislator Vivek Pandit, whose condition became alarming by Friday morning. Pandit called off his fast after the chief minister's assurance.

The agitation has since been called off and normalcy has returned to Vasai.

The protest against the proposed induction of 53 villages into newly formed Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) by MLA Vivek Pandit and his supporters continued on Thursday. Vivek Pandit and his followers shaved their heads and continued their indefinite hunger strike in front of tahsildar office.

53 villages from Vasai and Virar area are protesting against the induction in VVMC. Shramajivi Sanghatan's chief Vivek Pandit and Gaon Bachao Aandolan Samiti went on an indefinite hunger strike on Tuesday. The villagers have stopped the functioning of Tahsildar office demanding immediate exclusion of their villages from VVMC. Heavy police security has been deployed across Vasai and Virar. Three killed during Holi celebrations

Virar: Three people were electrocuted in the district late tonight while they were watching the lighting up of fire for the Holi festival.
All deceased were residents of Virar but their identities were yet to be established, police said.
According to Virar police, electric poles were erected to support the fire at the 'mandvi' and live wires fell on the victims who were leaning on the poles. They were electrocuted instantly.
Senior officials of the police station rushed to the site and further investigations were in progress.
Residents of the area said such incidents are very rare during the Holi celebrations in the past.

Cops will help women board trains

Women who find it difficult to get into the ladies’ compartment during peak hour will soon get a helping hand from the railway police. Female Home Guards or policewomen will be posted outside these compartments during rush-hour to ensure bullies don’t block the entrance.
